Nashville Star is an American reality television program. It was last produced and transmitted during mid-2008 on NBC, following five seasons on USA Network. It premiered on March 8, 2003, and its five seasons on USA made it the longest-running competition series on cable television. In Canada, the show aired on CMT through season 5, but moved to E! beginning with season 6. CMT in the United States reaired each episode in season 6. It was similar to American Idol, in that performers had to sing to impress both celebrity judges and the public via call-in and/or internet votes. Unlike American Idol, however, the performers were limited to country music. This restriction was relaxed for Season 6, allowing for the finalists to choose from many genres of music, but the songs were arranged to maintain a country sound. On March 13, 2009, it was confirmed that the series had been canceled by NBC and would not be returning for a seventh season....

Pop Idol is a British television music competition which ran on ITV from 2001 to 2003. The aim of the show was to decide the best new young pop singer in the UK based on viewer voting and participation. Two series were broadcast - one in 2001-2002 and a second in 2003. Česko hledá SuperStar is the Czech version of Idol series. It is broadcast on Czech TV Nova, first series in spring 2004, the second a year later, the third series in autumn 2006. The show was very popular in 2004, with an audience of more than 3.5 million people; other media attention was also huge. The further series' rating was rather lower. In 2008, the program was superseded by the X Factor. However, Czech broadcaster TV Nova and broadcaster of Slovak version of Idol TV Markíza confirmed that both versions will be joined into one federal. The latest version is called Česko Slovenská Superstar, which started in September 2009....

The Cut is a 1998 MTV talent series hosted by TLC member Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes. MTV's The Cut, was a precursor of sorts to American Idol. A handful of would-be pop stars, rappers, and rock bands competed against each other and were judged. The show's final winner, which ended up being a male-female rap duo named Silky, was promised a record deal and MTV's funding to produce a music video, which would enter MTV's heavy rotation. Anastacia then unknown singer-dancer, came in 2nd place in the competition, but was still signed to a record label in 1998....

Star Academy is a French reality television show produced by the Dutch company Endemol. It consists of a contest of young singers. It spawned an equally successful show in Quebec called Star Académie. It is broadcast on NRJ12. At the end of each season, selected contestants would go on tour around France, Morocco, Switzerland, Belgium, Tunisia, and other French-speaking countries. The contestants stayed in the Dammarie-lès-Lys castle: The Vives-Eaux castle. The WB's Superstar USA is a television show which spoofed the popular show American Idol. Essentially that show's polar opposite, Superstar USA told contestants they were looking for the best singer when they were actually looking for the worst. Hosted by Brian McFayden, people first audition before three judges in four cities across the United States. Finalists were chosen based on the lie that they were the most likely to be able to parlay their win into a successful recording contact based on talent. However, the audition process was the opposite of American Idol as good singers were mocked and told no while bad singers were given gushing praise and passed to the next round. Said finalists were subjected to makeovers where they were encouraged to emulate pop stars. Contestants would then be falsely encouraged and praised by the judges as well as the stylists, choreographers and vocal coaches; in particular, they would be encouraged to try and stretch their vocal range far beyond what they could actually reach. Contestants with charistmatic personalities, such as the singer/songwriter pro-cheerleader Nina "Diva", were heavily encouraged to follow all of the producer driven directives....

Star Académie is a Canadian reality TV series started in 2003, aimed primarily at the Quebec television audience, featuring an array of young women and men competing for the title of the best singer. It is the Québécois adaptation of the French television show Star Academy produced by Netherlands company Endemol, based on the Spanish format called Operación Triunfo. There have been seasons in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2009, and 2012....
